I know this guy, let’s call him The Hidalgo, who as a fourth-generation rancher considers himself some-sort of modern earl. Once, over drinks The Hidalgo informed me that as “a member of the land-owning class,” I had an obligation to marry a fellow land-owner. Honestly? Make no mistake, I am exceptionally proud of my heritage, but there is a distinction to be made between pride and gross self-entitlement. For every quietly capable rancher, who is both a stockman and steward of the land, there is The Hidalgo, a pompous dilettante with more money than sense.

A member of the land owning class? Do people still say that? How funny!
A real charmer, The Hidalgo.
