I took a moment to reflect upon the sky, while on my morning walk. A thick blanket of clouds is hung over the dogs and I. The sunrise just managed to peek through the fleecy cover and tint the dried cornstalks rose gold. I watch the sky often. Like conversations about the weather, it is a habit peculiar to an agrarian upbringing.
Recently, the kids and I took the opportunity to visit a local observatory and watch the sky. The stars had to compete with the waning full moon. Nonetheless, views through the telescopes were startlingly amazing. The sense of wonder and awe upon the kids’ faces, was as beautiful to witness as globular clusters, nebulae, and double stars.
The night sky is so vast, incomprehensibly so, and filled with mysteries. When I gaze at the stars, I am insignificant. The worries that dominate my day, seem minor in comparison and slip away. Perspective granted every time I take a moment to look. The expanse of stars in the night sky also offers confirmation of my existence. It is a map, delineated by constellations. I look up at those familiar patterns and know that I am meant to be here on Earth. The night sky was made for me.
