I am gifted. I’m not referring to my (ahem) talent for words, striking looks, or multitude of skills. Rather, I’m referring to the “steps” in my life. I’ve been blessed with a thoughtful, creative step-daughter and an accomplished, passionate step-mother. I have not always been “in step” with my steps; their presence in my life impels me to grow as an individual.
“Step” is an inadequate label, it does not embody the complexity of these relationships. It verges on derogatory, calling to mind the “Evil Stepmother.” I don’t have any alternatives to suggest. It is a shame there is not a more evocative title for a family of remarriage. A term that expressed the difficulty, as well as the beauty in the creation of a modern family. There is no easy path to family. These relationships take time and trouble to form, for me they have been unexpectedly worth it.
My bonus daughter, B, is counting down the days to her fourteenth birthday. The fact she is celebrating this day with us in Idaho, is the most wonderful aspect of our move. Watching my son revel in the daily presence of his “Sissie” warms my heart. B is creative, thoughtful, hard-working, and soon another year older. Happy Birthday! I truly am gifted.
Thank you Rachel. I feel exactly the same. I too dislike the implications of “step” people.
Be well, write on, and Happy Valentine’s Day xoxo
